2019 Water Main Replacement Projects

To improve the reliability of our distribution system, we replace water mains based on an an index we've developed that ranks the condition of each segment of main and its likelihood of failure. In some cases, water main projects are moved up the list so they are completed prior to a street paving project or major development. We plan to replace 18 miles of main in 2019. One mile may not seem a very long distance to replace. But each mile represents approximately 12 separate projects; 15 miles required administering about 180 contracts each year.

A main replacement is usually completed in 6-12 weeks during the construction season which runs from April into December, weather permitting. Track the progress of a project in any street below. The projects are listed numerically by aldermanic district.

•    When a project contract is awarded, we mail a information to customers affected by the project about what to expect and instructions for street parking during construction.
•    Just prior to the start of construction, our inspectors go door-to-door to contact residents and businesses with the actual start date, or leave a door hanger indicating the date.
•    Throughout the project, our staff will make several contacts with customers to notify them of significant stages of the project.

As noted in the Main Replacement Notice letter, during the course of construction, there may be periods of inactivity. This is temporary and allows time for testing and coordination of multiple projects. Upon completion of the project, we will ensure clean-up and site restoration.

Water mains are made of cast iron, not lead. The service line connecting the main to the meter may be made of lead. Water main replacement projects will affect 250 properties with lead service lines in 2019. In these projects, we sever the service line connection with the old main, replace the lead service line with copper, and connect the new copper service line to the new main.
