About the Lead Service Line Replacement Program
Milwaukee's water meets all federal and state standards and is lead-free when it leaves the City’s treatment plants, ensuring it's safe and pure. Lead can enter water through lead service lines that connect homes to the water main in the street, as well as from interior plumbing and fixtures. Milwaukee Water Works is working to reduce lead in drinking water by replacing approximately 65,000 lead service lines with copper by 2037.
The program includes:
- Required Replacements: For childcare facilities, leaks or failures, and certain planned projects
- Prioritization Program: Replaces the service lines in neighborhoods with the greatest need, based on key factors.
- Voluntary Owner Request: Property owners may pay for replacement; limited availability each year
The Prioritization Program is now in its third year, serving 23 designated neighborhood zones across the city. Construction for this year's program has begun.
