About the Lead Service Line Replacement Program:
Milwaukee's drinking water meets all federal and state guidelines. While the water is lead-free when it leaves the City’s treatment plants, lead can enter drinking water through lead service lines that connect homes to the water main in the street, as well as through interior plumbing and fixtures. Milwaukee Water Works is proactively addressing this risk by replacing approximately 65,000 remaining lead service lines with copper by 2037. Key program components include:
- Standard Replacements: Full replacement of lead service lines for childcare facilities, leaks or failures, and certain planned projects.
- Prioritization Program: Replaces the service lines in neighborhoods with the greatest need, based on key factors. Now in its second year, the Prioritization Program is actively serving eligible property owners within 15 designated neighborhood zones throughout the city. Construction is already underway for this year’s planned replacements.
