19th Annual Mayor’s Design Awards Announced

The Mayor’s Design Awards is a long-standing Milwaukee tradition that gives recognition to projects—big and small—that exhibit design excellence while respecting the urban fabric and contributing to the character of their surroundings. At this year’s 19th annual awards ceremony, 22 projects in 10 different Aldermanic Districts across the city were honored. Mayor Tom Barrett and Robert Greenstreet, Dean of the UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP), presented awards in a gala event May 25.

Projects as big as a neighborhood park and as small as a chair were celebrated for design excellence and their positive contributions to the city.

Nominated by the public and carefully selected through a highly competitive selection process, the winners reflect the great positive changes occurring in Milwaukee.

2015 brought a variety of new and refurbished signage, art, apartments, offices, commercial buildings, and outdoor public spaces. This year’s winners include not just exciting modern buildings built from the ground up, but updates of those in need of a facelift and renovations of those a part of Milwaukee’s industrial past. Recipients also include outdoor areas that provide gathering spaces and make their neighborhoods more people-friendly, and sculptures and signage that brighten up the street.
