Historic Property Plaque ProgramHistoric Property Plaque Program


In order to celebrate Milwaukee’s unique heritage and recognize properties that contribute to the historic fabric of the city, the Historic Preservation Commission oversees the city’s Historic Property Plaque Program. Launched in 2014, the program selects exceptional properties within the community, researches the history of the property and provides the property owner with the opportunity to commemorate that history with a plaque on the building’s façade. Properties must be listed on at least one of the National, Wisconsin, or Milwaukee registers of historic places to qualify. However, you may apply for a plaque while your historic listing is pending.

Currently, property owners must pay the cost of obtaining a historic property plaque. The HPC will oversee the creation of the plaque, and is currently able to offer property owners the following options for preparation and design:

Applications for a Milwaukee Historic Preservation Commission Historic Property Plaque will be researched and reviewed as staff time allows. When research is completed on a an application, the plaque will be scheduled for a public hearing at the next available quarterly meeting: January, April, July and October. A staff member will contact you with further information and instructions if you qualify for a plaque.
