Lack of a valid driver's license is a significant barrier for many people—particularly low-income youth and people of color who are more easily caught in the cycle of serious legal, financial and social consequences. Driver's license restoration—something spurred in Milwaukee a few years ago by former Mayor Marvin Pratt (former 1st District Alderman)—positively affects the capacity of these individuals to obtain and keep jobs, to provide a better quality of life for themselves and their families, and to fully participate in and contribute to their communities.
The Center for Driver's License Recovery and Employability is a comprehensive collaborative effort to reduce the numbers of unlicensed drivers in Milwaukee County through the establishment and operation of a community-wide driver's license recovery and employability resource center in Milwaukee.
Center headquarters are located on the premises of the Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) in downtown Milwaukee, within two blocks of the two major court systems involved (State Circuit Court and City of Milwaukee Municipal Court) and a major branch office of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Motor Vehicle Division.
