A Plan for Milwaukee's Northwest Side

Development of the Park East Corridor and Menomonee Valley may be getting most of the media attention these days, but the northwest side of Milwaukee, including a large portion of the 2nd District, will soon be in the limelight as well. A plan for development of the northwest side, running from W. Hampton Ave. and W. Silver Spring Dr. on the south to the city's northern limits, is one of three new area plans recently approved by the Common Council.

The objective of a comprehensive plan is to review the conditions, trends and related policy actions of an area to help define the planning goals, policies and objectives for the future. This process seeks to:

  • Build upon the strengths of the neighborhoods.
  • Define future objectives for housing, transportation, economic development & land use.
  • Optimize long-term values of public and private investment.
  • Generate consensus among businesses, property owners, residents and community organizations.
  • Provide a predictable regulatory process.

A Plan Advisory Group will be formed in the next few months to make recommendations for public participation, plan development and implementation. It will include elected officials, major corporations, business improvement districts, neighborhood organizations, businesses, homeowners and residents. A website will be developed, and public meetings will be scheduled. "I encourage residents to get involved in this process," said Ald. Davis. "This is a city policy that will guide development of the northwest side for generations, and we need broad public input to ensure it is a comprehensive and workable plan."

For information on the plan for Milwaukee's northwest side you can check the Department of City Development website at http://city.milwaukee.gov/DCD for updates or call 414-286-5720.

Boundaries of the Northwest Side Area Comprehensive Plan are the northern, eastern and western city limits and on the south from W. Hampton Ave. to N. 91st St. and Silver Spring Dr. east to the village of Brown Deer.
