City of Milwaukee Weekly COVID-19 Update

MILWAUKEE – The dominant presence of the Delta variant in Milwaukee continues to cause an increase in positive COVID-19 cases. The seven-day burden rate climbed to 95.4 per 100,000 people, remaining in the “substantial transmission” category, and the percentage of positive tests is at 7.5% and in the “moderate transmission” category.

This week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new masking recommendations for areas of substantial or high transmission, a category the city of Milwaukee falls into. Following the CDC’s guidance, the City of Milwaukee Health Department issued a mask advisory for everyone, regardless of vaccination status, to wear a mask when indoors with people outside of their household.

“Our message remains the same: get vaccinated,” said Health Commissioner Kirsten Johnson. “Vaccinations are safe, effective, and our best tool to combat this pandemic. We need to come together to keep our vulnerable populations safe, especially children under 12 years old and those who are immunocompromised, by wearing a mask in public and getting vaccinated.”

Currently, 50.5% of adults of 16 years old in Milwaukee are fully vaccinated, with 54.7% having received at least one dose. COVID-19 vaccinations are free, easily accessible, and available without an appointment at walk-in clinics and mobile clinics.

On Sunday, August 1, attendees of the Puerto Rican Family Festival at Wilson Park (1601 W. Howard Ave.) will have the opportunity to be vaccinated on-site from 12 to 4 p.m. The MHD vaccination team will also be at MPD District 2’s National Night Out (2201 S. 7th St.) on Tuesday, August 3 from 4 to 7:30 p.m. and MPD District 4’s National Night Out (7801 W. Acacia St.) on Wednesday, August 4 from 3 until 7 p.m.

With the increased transmission rate of the Delta variant, everyone, regardless of vaccination status, is strongly encouraged to get tested if you come in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or experience any symptoms. More information on free testing locations and hours can be found at

To ensure equitable testing and vaccination opportunities at the Northwest Health Center (7630 W. Mill Rd.) and Southside Health Center (1639 S. 23rd St.), the hours will update beginning Monday, August 2. The hours for both locations will be as follows:

Monday: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
