Milwaukee Health Department Issues Cold Weather Health Advisory

Residents urged to take precautions during cold weather conditions
 

MILWAUKEE – The City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD), in partnership with the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the National Weather Service (NWS), has issued a Cold Weather Health Advisory for Milwaukee County. The health advisory is in effect from 10 PM tonight (December 11) through 10 AM tomorrow morning (December 12).

Frigid air temperatures, combined with high winds, will produce wind chills as low as -25°F, posing a risk of frostbite and hypothermia. Residents are encouraged to take the following precautions during this period to stay safe and protect others:

  • Limit Time Outdoors. Avoid prolonged exposure to the cold and wind. Wind chills this low can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Call 2-1-1 for information on warming locations throughout Milwaukee County.
     
  • Dress Appropriately. Wear multiple layers water-resistant clothing, along with gloves, hats, and scarves when outdoors.
     
  • Know the Signs of Cold-Related Health Risks
    • Frostbite Symptoms: Numbness, tingling, stinging, or aching, especially in fingers, toes, ears, and nose.
       
    • Hypothermia Symptoms: Shivering, confusion, drowsiness, clumsiness, and slurred speech. Hypothermia can occur even at temperatures above freezing if clothing becomes wet.
  • Check in on Others. Reach out to neighbors, relatives, and others who may need assistance staying warm. Call 2-1-1 for help connecting to information on warm places to stay warm.
     
  • Heat Your Home Safely.
    • Use approved indoor heating devices and ensure proper ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning or fires.
       
    • Never use outdoor appliances like wood-burning grills, coal stoves, or camp stoves indoors.
       
    • Keep flammable materials, such as blankets or paper, away from heaters.
    • Know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning: Headaches, nausea, dizziness, confusion, and in severe cases, seizures or unconsciousness.
  • Prepare for Emergencies. Keep an emergency kit in your home and vehicle with blankets, water, non-perishable food, and a flashlight. Ensure your phone is fully charged in case of power outages.
     
  • Protect Pets. Bring pets indoors or provide them a warm, sheltered space. Ensure they have access to fresh, unfrozen water.
     
  • Stay Informed. Check local news and weather reports for updates on weather conditions and safety tips.
