Enhancement to your Benefits: Subsidized COBRA Health Coverage for 90 Days

The City of Milwaukee acknowledges the profound impact of losing a family member, and we understand that arranging alternative health insurance coverage is often not a priority during such a challenging time.

As of June 1, 2025, the City offers three months of subsidized COBRA health plan coverage for surviving family members who were enrolled in the City's health coverage at the time of the employee's passing.

Details of the Program:

  • Surviving family members who were enrolled in the health plan at the time of the employee's death will be automatically enrolled in COBRA health coverage.
  • For the first three months, the COBRA coverage rate will be subsidized, allowing surviving family members to pay the same rate as an active employee, rather than the full cost of the plan.
  • Eligible families will receive billing information for their COBRA coverage, and timely payment is required to ensure the continuation of coverage.
  • Notification letters, along with COBRA information packets, will be mailed to eligible family members at the time of the event.
  • Family members can extend their COBRA coverage for up to 36 months based on the employee's death; however, only the initial three months will be subsidized at the active employee rate.
