New Grant Program to Address Food Deserts
I was glad to visit Sentry Foods along 92nd and Lisbon Ave, a recent recipient of one of the City’s commercial grant programs that is helping replace aging equipment and support the store’s ability to stay in business. As grocery store closures continue to be a challenge for neighborhoods across Milwaukee, we are leveraging strong partnerships to help curve this trend. It’s clear that in an industry with very thin margins, upfront capital costs can quickly put stores at risk. That’s why I’m working with Common Council members on a new grant program to assist grocers with equipment needs and start-up inventory for businesses looking to create or expand grocery and pharmacy options.
At the same time, my office has launched an interdepartmental task force to develop innovative solutions for improving food access and reducing food waste. I also applaud Palermo’s Villa, Inc. for stepping up with planned donation of food and resources to pantries across Milwaukee. I want to recognize Alderman Stamper and Alderwoman Pratt for their leadership on legislation requiring advance notice before grocery closures. Residents deserve time to prepare and find alternatives, and I strongly support this effort and will be proud to sign it when it reaches my desk.
