The Mayor’s primary role is to represent the residents of the city of Milwaukee as its chief executive officer. While the Mayor has almost countless daily, weekly and monthly tasks and obligations, some of the key ones are identified below:
Prepare and deliver the annual City of Milwaukee Budget.
Nominate individuals to serve as department commissioners and senior leaders.
Represent the City of Milwaukee when meeting with dignitaries, such as the President of the United States or foreign representatives.
Appoint individuals to City of Milwaukee Boards and Commissions.
Create and develop policies and procedures to improve the city of Milwaukee.
Meet with business leaders, community groups and members of other governmental bodies.
Issue mayoral proclamations honoring individuals and organizations who contribute to making Milwaukee great.
Refer citizen service requests to the appropriate departments for review and action.
Milwaukee Police Department
The City of Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) aims to enforce all local, state and federal laws. MPD is broken down into seven police districts, each having unique boundaries and sworn officers assigned to those areas.

Department of City Development (DCD)
The Department of City Development (DCD) is responsible for guiding and promoting development that creates jobs, builds wealth, and strengthens the urban environment while at the same time respecting equity, economy, and ecology.

Department of Neighborhood Services (DNS)
The Department of Neighborhood Services (DNS) is responsible for ensuring that minimum standards and codes are followed for private property in Milwaukee. They are also responsible for enforcing city ordinances relating to nuisance complaints, such as noise, animals, and garbage.

Department of Public Works (DPW)
The Department of Public Works contributes to Milwaukee's quality of life and economic development in many ways. They are responsible for the design, maintenance, and operation of streets, sidewalks, alleys, bridges, sewers, water mains, underground conduit, telecommunications services, traffic signals, and street lighting for the city of Milwaukee, which covers more than 95 square miles; 221 city buildings, a fleet of over 1,500 vehicles, 476 acres of boulevards and green space, and 200,000 street trees.

Department of Administration (DOA)
The Department of Administration is responsible for many of the centralized functions of the City of Milwaukee, including budget and management, intergovernmental relations, standards and purchasing, warehouses, information technology services/information technology resource management, and Community Development Block Grant Administration and small business assistance.
