Winter Parking Regulations

Vehicles must be legally parked and in compliance with all posted signs.

To obtain the posted parking violations for a specific street, go to Street Parking Regulations. Some winter parking regulations are not posted, but can be found at Winter Parking Regulations- Not Posted and on the map below.

DECEMBER 1 TO MARCH 1

SPECIFIC SIDE PARKING

Certain residential streets are restricted to parking on a specific side of the street during the winter months. These streets are posted with signs reading "No Parking" on one side of the street, either for the entire December 1 to March 1 period, or with a monthly alternation of the prohibited side. To determine whether this regulation applies to a specific street go to Street Parking Regulations.

EXCEPTION ALTERNATE SIDE NIGHT PARKING

Night parking is allowed on both sides of these streets from March 1 to December 1. From December 1 to March 1 alternate side night parking is required. On even-numbered calendar days (before midnight) a vehicle with a valid night permit must be legally parked on the side of the street with even house numbers; on odd-numbered calendar days (before midnight) a vehicle must be parked on the side of the street with odd house numbers. Parking is allowed between 2:00 A.M. and 6:00 A.M. with a valid permit or night parking permission with some exceptions.  Please visit Winter Parking Regulations- Not Posted page to look up if this applies to your street.

OVERNIGHT PARKING

No overnight parking is allowed on through highways and mass transit (bus) routes from December 1 to March 1. These streets are not posted. For a list of these streets please go to the Winter Parking Regulations- Not Posted page. In case of a "Snow Emergency" prior to December 1 or after March 1, vehicles must be moved to a side street and must be legally parked in conformity with all other regulations on the proper side of the street. 

Red- Through highways and mass transit routes

Blue- Snow Emergency Tow-Away routes, vehicles parked on these streets during a Snow Emergency are subject to towing.

 

WHEN A DPW SNOW OPERATION IS CALLED

A DPW Snow Operation is called when snow amounts necessitate exception streets to alternate side park and to extend night parking hours from 11PM-6AM to facilitate snow clearing in parking lanes.  Sign up for email or text alerts to be notified when operation has been called.

ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING

Alternate side parking is required from 11PM-6AM, unless otherwise posted. On even-numbered calendar days (before midnight) a vehicle with a valid night permit must be legally parked on the side of the street with even house numbers; on odd-numbered calendar days (before midnight) a vehicle must be parked on the side of the street with odd house numbers.   Continue to alternate side park until the DPW Operation is canceled.  Always follow posted signs, as they take precedence.

Milwaukee Public Schools and City owned parking lots available during DPW Snow Operations.

 

WHEN A SNOW EMERGENCY IS DECLARED

A Snow Emergency is declared whenever snow fall during any period of 24 hours or less which is determined and declared by the Commissioner of Public Works to constitute a serious public hazard impairing transportation, the movement of food and fuel supplies, medical care, fire, health, and police protection, and other vital facilities of the City.  Such an emergency is declared to continue for a period of 72 hours or until such earlier times as snow plowing operations have been declared completed by the Commissioner of Public Works.  In addition to the regulations below, "Temporary No Parking" signs may be posted by the City to assist in clean-up after major snowfalls.

SNOW ROUTE TOW-AWAY ZONE

Vehicles parking in violation of "Snow Route Tow-way Zone" (in blue on the map above) and "Temporary No Parking Tow Away) signs or obstructing traffic during a "Snow Emergency" will be towed away at owner's expense.  There are no exceptions.

STREET PARKING ALTERNATIVES

Milwaukee Public Schools make some of its playgrounds available for overnight parking during declared snow emergencies and clean-up periods.
