WEST GREENFIELD AVENUE RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT 

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE-NOVEMBER

As of November 21, 2018, West Greenfield Avenue from South Cesar E. Chavez Drive to South 35th Street is open to both east and westbound traffic. 

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The reconstruction project of West Greenfield Avenue between South 35th Street and South Cesar E. Chavez Drive will consist of removing the deteriorated pavement and replacing it with new concrete pavement, curbs & gutters, driveway approaches and sidewalks. When completed, the roadway will provide for an 11-foot wide driving lane, an 8-foot wide parking lane and a 5-foot wide bicycle lane in each direction. 

PROJECT ELEMENTS
-New curb bump-outs at majority of intersections
-Updated street lighting and traffic signals
-Additional storm sewer drains installed
-More than 90 trees planted along the street border

PROJECT BENEFITS
-Enhances safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists
-Improves the overall operation of the roadway

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING CONSTRUCTION 

The City of Milwaukee works to minimize impact for residents, businesses and the traveling public during construction. 

Construction Hours: Construction work is allowed from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The operation of any motorized equipment will not be allowed between 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. without prior written approval. Work over weekends and holidays will be allowed with department approval.

Traffic: West Greenfield Avenue will remain open to one-way traffic during the two stages of reconstruction. 

Stage 1A: Eastbound traffic on West Greenfield Avenue is maintained. Greenfield Avenue from South Layton Boulevard to South 35th Street will be closed to westbound traffic. 

Stage 1B: Eastbound traffic on West Greenfield Avenue is maintained while the work is occurring on the north side of the street. No through traffic to side streets from the north side of West Greenfield Ave. EXCEPT:

  • South Layton Boulevard will be open for two-way traffic
  • A one-way southbound through lane will be open at S. 21st and S. 31st streets

Stage 2: Westbound traffic on West Greenfield Avenue is maintained while the work is occurring on the south side of the street. No through access to side streets from the south side of West Greenfield Ave. EXCEPT:

  • South Layton Boulevard open for two-way traffic
  • A one-way northbound through lane will be open at S. 21st and S. 31st streets

Parking Information: There will be no on-street parking on West Greenfield Avenue during construction.

Pedestrian Access: Pedestrian access will be maintained to adjacent properties and businesses during construction with the least amount of inconvenience.

Driveway Access: City staff and the contractor will work to minimize the amount of time any driveway access is restricted, and will notify the property owners 48 hours in advance of any driveway work.

Public Involvement Meeting
The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works held a public involvement meeting to receive input and share project details with residents and businesses located in the project area.
