KILBOURN TUNNELS REHABILITATION PROJECT
The rehabilitation project of the Kilbourn Tunnels will take place from April through October 2019. Work on the underground tunnels will consist of replacing leaking expansion joints in both tunnels and replacing a portion of the tunnel ceiling in the south tunnel.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING CONSTRUCTION
To minimize how construction will impact residents, businesses, and the traveling public, the project will be split into two stages:
Stage 1: The North Tunnel (I-43 northbound entrance ramp) will be fully closed to traffic from April 8 to June.
Stage 2: The South Tunnel (I-43 northbound exit to Kilbourn Ave) will be fully closed to traffic from June through October.
Traffic Detour: Advanced warning signs will be installed for the tunnel closures and posted signs will direct motorists to use the Fond du Lac/McKinley I-43 entrance/exit and North 6th Street.
Parking: On-street parking will be restricted during limited short-term lane closures on North 9th Street from West State Street to West Wells Street during both stages. In addition, short-term lane closures from MacArthur Square parking garage is planned. We anticipate one exit lane from the garage onto North 9th Street to be closed for 2-3 weeks during Stage 2.
Pedestrian Access: Short-term sidewalk closures on North 9th Street from West State Street to West Wells Street will occur during expansion joint work. Signage will be provided at crosswalks to direct pedestrians to the opposite of the street.
The pedestrian ramp from MacArthur Square Plaza and the parking garage stair access from North James Lovell Street will be closed during Stage 2.
Construction Hours: Work is allowed from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
All work is weather dependent and subject to change.
