WEST WELLS STREET RESURFACING PROJECT

West Wells Street from 6th Street to Water Street was fully open to traffic by the evening of November 30th.

PROJECT SUMMARY

The rehabilitation project of West Wells Street from North 6th Street to North Broadway will consist of milling the existing asphalt pavement and replacing it with a new asphalt surface; curb, gutter and sidewalks will be replaced where necessary and utility improvements will be made to drainage structures, traffic signals and signs, and street lighting. Side street improvements to North 2nd Street and North Plankinton Avenue are included with the project. Once completed, the roadway will provide for an 11-foot driving lane and variable width shared parking/bicycle accommodations in each direction.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING CONSTRUCTION

The City of Milwaukee works to minimize impact for businesses, residents and the traveling public during construction. Work will take place over two stages to maintain two-way traffic, one lane in each direction:

Stage 1: The curbed side portions of the roadway will be constructed with two-way traffic, one lane in each direction, maintained in the center of the roadway.

Stage 2: The center of the roadway will be constructed and two-way traffic, one lane in each direction, will be maintained on the curb side portions of the roadway.

>>Both stages of construction will work with the detour route set up for the adjacent Wells Street Bridge construction. This detour routes traffic to Kilbourn Avenue via Water Street and Old World 3rd Street.

Parking: On-street parking will be temporarily removed during construction.

Driveway Access: City staff and the contractor will work to minimize the amount of time any driveway access is restricted and will notify property owners 48 hours in advance of any driveway work.

Pedestrian Access: Pedestrian access will be maintained to abutting properties and businesses during construction with the least amount of inconvenience.

Riverwalk Access: The Riverwalk will be closed intermittently at the bridge to pedestrians to accommodate construction. Other areas of the Riverwalk will remain open. The adjacent Wells Street Bridge construction detour routes pedestrians to either Kilbourn Avenue or Wisconsin Avenue.

Bus Routes: Information for the 49 and 143 Flyers and Route 19 can be viewed here.

Construction Hours: Work is allowed from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
