SOUTH 35TH STREET BRIDGE OVER THE KINNICKINNIC RIVER REHABILITATION PROJECT

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE-NOVEMBER

The South 35th Street Bridge rehabilitation project has concluded and the road is now fully open to traffic. Due to the colder than normal weather, some project work will be completed next spring. This work includes applying a sealing coat on the bridge deck. Minimal short-term disruptions to traffic will occur during this operation in the spring. (11/8)

OCTOBER 

• The South 35th Street Bridge rehabilitation project is near completion. Remaining work includes final pavement markings, epoxy injection crack repair and landscape restoration. Currently, one lane of traffic in each direction is maintained on South 35th Street. We anticipate the roadway to be fully open by November 7th, weather permitting. (10/31)
   
• The South 35th Street bridge over the Kinnickinnic River is back open to traffic, with one lane of traffic in each direction. The contractor for the bridge rehabilitation project has started the painting operation which will take place over the next two to three weeks. The concrete surface repair work is nearly finished on the piers and abutments. We anticipate the bridge work to be complete in early November, weather permitting. (10/15)
   
• Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District (MMSD) has an emergency repair to their facilities in the intersection of South 35th Street and West Manitoba Street. MMSD’s work is outside of the our project limits and is not part of the bridge rehabilitation work. However, their work requires a full closure at West Manitoba Street and the South 35th Street bridge over the Kinnickinnic River. To minimize disruption, South 35th Street bridge over the Kinnickinnic River will remain closed through October 11th for MMSD to conduct their work, weather permitting. The contractor for the bridge rehabilitation project will continue to work under this closure. In mid-October, South 35th Street Bridge will re-open to traffic, one lane in each direction. (10/1)
  
  SEPTEMBER 
• The full closure on South 35th Street bridge over the Kinnickinnic River has been extended to Friday, September 27th. The weather conditions early last week delayed the concrete deck pour to Friday, September 13th. The extension allows sufficient time for the concrete to cure while the contractor completes other roadway work, not under live traffic. Thank you for your patience. (9/18)
   
• The South 35th Street Bridge over the Kinnickinnic River will begin stage 4 of operations. The entire bridge will be closed to traffic on Monday, September 9th starting at 9:00 a.m. and we anticipate re-opening the east side of the bridge on Friday, September 20th. For through traffic, we encourage motorists to use South 27th Street or West Forest Home Avenue. Local access will be maintained to West Kinnickinnic River Parkway and West Manitoba Street. During this stage, the contractor will pour the concrete deck and allow for curing time, rebuild the sidewalk and begin roadway approach work on the west side. Once complete, the east side of South 35th Street will re-open with one lane of traffic moving in each direction while the contractor continues rehabilitation work on the west side of the bridge. WHAT TO EXPECT DURING CONSTRUCTION

To minimize how construction will impact residents, businesses, and the traveling public, the project will have four major stages:

Stage 1: The east side of the bridge will be closed for construction. Motorists will travel on the west side of the street, with one lane of traffic moving in each direction. Pedestrian access shall be maintained on the west side of bridge. 

Stage 2: The entire bridge will be closed, for approximately seven calendar days, to allow for the pouring and curing of the concrete deck on the east side. Pedestrian access is maintained from Stage 1. Once the deck has cured, the west side of the street will re-open with one lane of traffic moving in each direction while the contractor continues rehabilitation work on the east side.

Stage 3: The west of the bridge will be closed for construction. Motorists will travel on the east side of the street, with one lane of traffic moving in each direction. Pedestrian access shall be maintained on the east side of the bridge. 

Stage 4: The entire bridge will be closed, for approximately seven calendar days, to allow for the pouring and curing of the concrete deck on the west side. Pedestrian access is maintained from Stage 3. Once the deck has cured, the east side of the street will re-open with one lane of traffic moving in each direction while the contractor continues rehabilitation work on the west side.

Bus Route #35: Detours and possible delays during both 7-day closures of the bridge for stages 2 and 4, though all regular stops will continue to be serviced. Stages 1 and 3 will maintain regular route and schedule. 

Parking: On-street parking will not be allowed during construction. 

Construction Hours: Work is allowed from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
