The railing installation on the west half of the bridge will be completed the week of August 17th. The contractor is finishing curb and gutter, electrical and CUC work before the anticipated traffic switch on Wednesday, August 19th. During this next stage of construction, motorists will be traveling on the newly constructed west side of 60th Street while work is taking place on the east side. By the end of next week, the contractor will begin to break and remove the existing pavement in the northbound lanes. Crews will also begin to remove the concrete deck on the east half of the 60th Street bridge over Lincoln Creek. This work will take place through the end of August. (Added 8/13/20)
The contractor has completed majority of the mainline pavement for stage 1 of construction on North 60th Street. Crews are also working on curb and gutter, electrical and CUC over the next three weeks. In addition, the contractor will install the bridge railing and add a protective surface treatment on the west side of the North 60th Street bridge. Start: May 4, 2020 Completion: End of October, 2020 All work is weather dependent and subject to change
The Department of Public Works, in conjunction with the State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation, will replace N. 60th St. from W. Hampton Ave. to W. Capitol Dr.
The project will consist of removing the deteriorated pavement and replacing it with new concrete pavement, curb & gutter, driveway approaches and sidewalk, where necessary. Street lighting and traffic signals will be updated and storm sewer inlets and laterals will be replaced as needed. In addition, the bridge deck over the Lincoln Creek will be replaced. Once completed, the roadway will accommodate two driving lanes, a bike lane in each direction and a parking lane for the majority of the project limits. The parking lane on the east side of North 60th Street between West Capitol Drive and North Fond du Lac Avenue will be eliminated.
The majority of the project is scheduled to be complete in October 2020 with landscape and electrical work planned in 2021.
Project Overview
To minimize how construction will impact residents, businesses, and the traveling public, the project will be split into two major stages:
STAGE 1: The west side of North 60th Street (southbound) will be closed for construction. Majority of the side streets on the west side of the project will be closed. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on the east side of the roadway. On-street parking will be restricted.
STAGE 2: The east side of North 60th Street (northbound) will be closed for construction. Majority of the side streets on the east side of the project will be closed. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on the west side of the roadway. On-street parking will be restricted.
DRIVEWAY ACCESS Commercial driveways: There will be disruptions to driveway access such as when the contractor is breaking and removing pavement, grading, putting in curb and gutter, and paving.
Residential driveways: Access will be restricted in the work zone. Temporary overnight parking permit instructions are provided.
Project staff will notify property owners 48 hours in advance when any driveway is being removed and rebuilt.
SIDEWALK Pedestrian access will be maintained to abutting properties during construction with the least amount of inconvenience. Short-term disruptions will occur when sidewalks are being removed and rebuilt.
BUS ROUTE This project will affect the MCTS BlueLine & Route 76 (via N. 60th) bus service. Updates can be found at www.ridemcts.com.
CONSTRUCTION HOURS Work is allowed Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The sawing of mainline concrete pavement outside of 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. will be allowed due to the fact it has to be completed right after "initial set" and before random cracking occurs. The placement of the mainline concrete pavement is a critical milestone in keeping these large paving projects on schedule.
Any work scheduled on weekends will need approval from the Department of Public Works.
The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works held a public involvement meeting to receive input and share project details with residents and businesses located in the project area. The open house meeting was held on April 10, 2018 at Mt. Lebanon Evangelical Lutheran Church and School from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. One resident attended.
The contractor and project team scheduled a pre-construction meeting for the public on April 28, 2020. This meeting was a teleconference from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. due to the challenges of COVID-19. One community member participated in the call. A pre-construction meeting is opportunity for the public to receive details on the construction schedule, staging, and address concerns of expected impacts.
