OVERVIEW
The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works and Wisconsin Department of Transportation are planning to rehabilitate Unit 14 of the 16th Street Viaduct over the Menomonee River. Improvements to the 1929 bridge will be made to the existing structural components. The original bascule bridge will be converted to a fixed bridge and the project will remove the original electrical and mechanical equipment. The work will meet all state and federal requirements, and maintain the unique, historically-significant aspects of the structure.
PROJECT SCHEDULE
We are anticipating a design completion in February of 2025. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in the summer of 2025 and be completed by the fall of 2026.
PROJECT GOALS
- Rehabilitate the existing structure
- Make travel safe and comfortable for everyone by providing a solid surface across the deck
PROJECT FACTS
- Open grid steel deck will be replaced with a solid surface concrete deck to match the other segments of the viaduct
- New structural steel elements will be installed throughout structure
- Electrical and Mechanical Systems will be removed, creating a permanently fixed bridge
FUNDING
The construction project is funded through the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Local Bridge Program and includes 80% State and 20% City funding.
