A licensed plumber is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. They ensure that all work complies all with local and state codes.

A licensed plumber in the state of Wisconsin must go through a 5 year apprenticeship program to become a journey level plumber with career advancement opportunities that include master plumber, cross connection control tester, medical gas installer, plumbing inspector as well as lead abatement and green plumbing technologies.

  1. Residential Plumber
  • Installs plumbing in new and existing homes and services old plumbing systems
  1. Commercial Plumber  
  • Mainly focuses on new and existing plumbing systems within commercial properties with technologies not commonly seen in residential settings. A strong understanding of plumbing code is needed
  1. Industrial Plumber
  • Specializes in plumbing systems within industrial settings such as power plants, water treatment plants and heavy machine shops
  1. Service Plumber
  • Specializes in service and repair of existing plumbing systems in residential and commercial settings, a strong mechanical aptitude is required for the wide spectrum of mechanical repairs that may be needed

Starting Requirements:

- Highschool diploma or GED

- Math (geometry and algebra) and reading skills (an Accuplacer test may be required)

- Physical fitness for construction

- Medical physical as well as drug screen may be required

Length of Training/Apprenticeship:

- Typically 4-5 years for full apprenticeship
