City of Milwaukee Hosts 2026 Respiratory Season Awareness Kick-Off

MILWAUKEE – Respiratory season is here, and staying protected against both flu and COVID-19 remains an essential part of keeping yourself and your family healthy. On Thursday, October 22, the City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) will be joined by Mayor Cavalier Johnson, Milwaukee County’s Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) and Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) leadership at a press event at Story School to highlight respiratory season readiness. Speakers will receive their annual flu vaccines and share key guidance for staying healthy this season.

The flu and COVID-19 vaccines are recommended for everyone 6 months and older, with added importance for people at higher risk of severe illness, including older adults, young children, and pregnant individuals. Following the event, free flu and COVID-19 vaccines will be available on a first-come, first-served basis to anyone 6 months and older. Vaccines are also offered at MHD’s three immunization clinics (Northwest Health Center, Keenan Health Center, and Southside Health Center) at no cost.

For COVID-19 testing, individuals should contact a doctor, primary care provider, or local pharmacy for options.

“Getting your flu vaccine helps protect you and the people around you. Every shot reduces the spread of respiratory illness,” said Commissioner of Health Mike Totoraitis, PhD. “As respiratory season begins, the best approach is to stay ahead of it by protecting yourself, your loved ones, and those most at risk in our community.”
