Statement from the Milwaukee Commission on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
Organization to Host Community Meeting to Discuss Domestic Violence Solutions
MILWAUKEE – The City of Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention & Milwaukee Commission on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault is deeply saddened by the surge of lives lost due to domestic and intimate partner violence. Without question, the impact of these tragedies extends well beyond the immediate victims, and we offer our sincere condolences to the loved ones of those involved.
This violence is not new to our nation, state, or city. However, we can’t keep looking the other way as our community is being devastated. We, as an entire community, must break our silence and speak out when it comes to this ongoing crisis. Fatal abuse is usually preceded by other forms of harm and abuse. This can be verbal and emotional abuse, including isolation and intimidation, which is often ignored. We can no longer pretend we don’t know what is happening. Let us all be our community’s voice.
Careful planning is critical to assist survivors leaving a relationship as safely as possible. If you are concerned for your safety, know that help is available. The City of Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention provides a list of resources to connect those in need with safe, confidential services.
We ask everyone to pay attention to our loved ones and encourage them to seek support at the earliest signs of mistreatment, regardless of the status of that relationship. We also know the importance of urging our community to assist those engaging in harmful behavior to seek assistance and resources to change their behavior and actions. We are all violence prevention and must act accordingly.
The community is invited to join a special virtual meeting hosted by the Milwaukee Domestic Violence Committee on August 2, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. to discuss the recent surge in domestic violence and how we all can come together to create solutions. Those interested can join using the Zoom link below.
