Are you qualified to work in elections?

In order to work in elections, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Live in Milwaukee COUNTY to work at the polls or in the City of MIlwaukee to work at Central Count.

  2. Be a U.S. Citizen.

  3. Be 18 years old (except qualified high school student poll workers).

  4. You are not currently serving a felony sentence and/or not adjudicated incompetent by a judge.

  5. Be able to read and write fluently in the English language.

  6. Hold no public office.

Wisconsin law requires every employer to grant an unpaid leave of absence to each employee who is appointed to serve as an election inspector if the employee who serves as an election official provides their employer with at least 7 days' notice.The leave is for the entire 24-hour period of each election day in which the employee serves in their official capacity as an election inspector. Upon request from the employer, the Milwaukee Election Commission will verify the appointment of their employee as an election inspector.  

 

Pay Details

$220.00 stipend for a full-day shift

$117.33 stipend for a half-day shift

Required training is also paid: $45.00 for attending a 3 hour in person training or $30.00 for attending a 2 hour virtual training.

Bilingual Election Inspectors receive an additional $15.00 for working at specific sites. 

 

Job duties on Election Day

  • Check-in Registered Voters
  • Register Eligible Voters
  • Monitor Voting and Ballot Marking Equipment
  • Assist and Guide Voters
  • Assist Chief Inspector as needed

 

Experience, Skills and Abilities

  • Customer service and attention to detail is an important requirement for the job.
  • Be on time and have reliable transportation
