Meet OAAA Director Melissa Buford

Champion for Education, Policy, and Community Advocacy
Melissa Buford is a dedicated leader in education, policy, and community advocacy, committed to uplifting Milwaukee’s most vulnerable and marginalized populations. A proud Milwaukee native and graduate of Milwaukee Trade and Technical High School, Melissa’s passion for service and equity has been the driving force throughout her career.
She began her professional journey at Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), where she gained extensive experience in administration and special education. Her leadership in the classroom and beyond helped bridge critical gaps between students, families, and essential resources, ensuring greater access to educational opportunities and support.
In June 2022, Melissa joined the Mayor’s Office as part of the Outreach Team, where she played a pivotal role in developing initiatives that directly impacted Milwaukee communities. Recognized for her exceptional leadership and dedication, she was promoted in August 2024 to the role of Policy Administration and Coordinator, further expanding her influence in shaping policies that drive meaningful change.
In February 2025, Melissa was appointed Director of the Office of African American Affairs, where she champions initiatives centered on education, mental wellness, public health, and economic empowerment, with a strong focus on strengthening and uplifting Milwaukee’s African American community.
Beyond her government work, Melissa is deeply engaged in the community, serving on multiple boards and committees that promote economic growth, advocacy, and cultural enrichment. She plays a key role in major city events, including serving on various boards and commissions.
Melissa’s lifelong commitment to education, public service, and cultural empowerment continues to shape her mission of creating lasting, positive change in Milwaukee. Through her leadership and advocacy, she remains steadfast in making Milwaukee a city where all residents can thrive.
