Milwaukee Police Department
Acting Chief Michael J. Brunson Sr. has been a member of the Milwaukee Police Department since December of 1995. On August 6, 2020, he was named Acting Chief of Police for the Milwaukee Police Department. Prior to this position, he was the Assistant Chief of the Patrol Bureau following his promotion in April of 2018. Previously, he was an Inspector in the Neighborhood Patrol Bureau and commander of the Internal Affairs Division where his responsibilities included overseeing investigations into allegations of misconduct against police personnel. After joining the Milwaukee Police Department in 1995, he was assigned to Districts 5 and 4 as an Officer and was promoted to Sergeant in November of 2000.
As a Sergeant, he was assigned to Districts 2, 7, and the Internal Affairs Division. He was promoted to Lieutenant in November of 2005 and assigned to District 5 on the early shift. He remained at District 5 until his promotion to Captain in May of 2010. As a captain he was the commanding officer of District Three until June of 2013 when he was promoted to the rank of deputy inspector. He has an MBA from Cardinal Stritch University and a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice from Florida A & M University. He is also a graduate of Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, the International Associations of Chiefs of Police Leadership in Police Organizations, and the Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) in Boston, Massachusetts.
