Captain Timothy D. Leitzke
Captain Timothy D. Leitzke is the commander of District Six, proudly serving over 117,000 residents of Milwaukee’s Southside. Prior to District Six, he was previously assigned as the Director of Training for the MPD Police Academy and Regional Training Center and as the Night Watch Commander. Captain Leitzke is also the commander for the Major Incident Response Team and presided over the Civil Disturbance mission for the 2024 Republican National Convention hosted in Milwaukee.
Captain Leitzke joined the Milwaukee Police Department in 2002, beginning his career assigned to District Seven as a Police Officer. He was promoted to Police Sergeant in 2007 and supervised officers at Districts Five and Three and was also assigned as an investigating supervisor at Internal Affairs. Captain Leitzke was promoted to Police Lieutenant in 2013 and assigned to the Criminal Investigations Bureau. He also served as a shift commander at Districts Five and One, as well as the Lieutenant in charge of Internal Affairs. While assigned to District One, Captain Leitzke developed the Milwaukee Bike Theft Reduction Initiative (#MKEBTR)- a community oriented and problem-solving approach to addressing bike theft in Milwaukee through community education, data analysis, investigations and partnerships.
Captain Leitzke is a member of the Race, Equity and Procedural Justice Committee in Milwaukee County and the MPD representative on the City of Milwaukee's Racial Equity and Inclusion Leadership Team. He has taught numerous police agencies across the country as a National Instructor for Fair and Impartial Policing, a curriculum that instructs officers in a science-based approach to understanding the impact of implicit bias on decision-making, and using that knowledge for safer and more procedurally just outcomes when engaging the communities, they are sworn to serve and protect.
Captain Leitzke earned a Bachelor of Arts from UW-La Crosse, and actively endeavors to apply credentialed training he has received from the Senior Management Institute for Police #89, Governing Alliance for Racial Equity, International Associations of Chiefs of Police - Leadership in Police Organizations, Problem Oriented Policing, Evidence Based Policing, Strategic Police Leadership, and Northwestern University - Supervision of Police Personnel. Captain Leitzke is a Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board certified instructor in Defense and Arrest Tactics, Emergency Vehicle Operations, Professional Communications, and Vehicle Contacts, is a FEMA certified Field Force Operations instructor, is a member of MPD’s Crisis Intervention Team, and has received multiple awards for Meritorious Service during his career to date.
