Captain Benjamin M. Canniff

 

Captain Canniff moved to the City of Milwaukee in 2006 to join the Milwaukee Police Department as a Police Officer. Prior to that, he served as a Correctional Officer and later as a Correctional Sergeant with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections for nearly nine years.

Captain Canniff began his career with the Milwaukee Police Department in District 4. He later became a Field Training Officer, where he helped train and mentor newly hired officers. He also served as a School Resource Officer for a short time.

In April 2014, he was promoted to the rank of Police Sergeant and served in District 3, the Technical Communications Division, the Violent Crimes Division, and the Homicide Division.

In August 2024, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and assigned to the Homicide Division, where he supervised the night shift.

In June 2026, Captain Canniff was promoted to the rank of Captain and remained assigned to the Homicide Division.

Captain Canniff holds an Associate of Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice. He has completed the FBI's 40-hour Hostage Negotiation Course, Ethics and Leadership Training, IACP Leadership in Police Organizations Certificate, and is a member of the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team. He is also pursuing a certificate in Organizational Management through the Southern Police Institute.
