Project Overview
The City of Milwaukee’s “rapid implementation” initiative builds quick, low-cost street improvements to increase the safety and comfort of people walking, biking, and driving.
The N. 27th St. project used paint, colored pavement markings, and flexible posts to create curb extensions at four intersections between W. Wells St. and W. State St. The crosswalks were also repainted, and the Near West Side Business Improvement District (NWS BID) will be adding decorative planters to some curb extensions.
Quick-Build, Big Impact
Preliminary studies show that, after these improvements, drivers on N. 27th St. are speeding less and yielding to people walking more often. Excessive speeding (over 40 mph) has dropped over 40% since these improvements were built and drivers are yielding to pedestrians 23% more often.

How does this project improve safety?
Curb extensions reduce passing on the right, slow speeds of turning motorists, and can also reduce speeding by visually narrowing the travel lanes. They also create more space for people walking and shorten the crossing distance across a street.
Was parking removed with this project?
No. The curb extensions were installed at intersections, where parking is already prohibited within 15 feet of a crosswalk.
What happens if there are problems with the project?
Rapid implementation projects can be easily adjusted by adding, moving, or removing flexible posts as needed. The City is evaluating the project to measure changes and identify any potential issues.
Do individual businesses need to do anything?
The City is working with the Near West Side BID to ensure that basic maintenance like sweeping debris is carried out on a regular basis. The City is responsible for replacing any posts that get knocked down.
