Water meters
Repair or order a new meter, how to read a meter
Drinking water utilities use water meters to record how much water flows into your house or building each billing period, and charge the property owner for all water that passes through the meter and into the building. Water meters are located in the basement or first floor if there is no basement, along the wall nearest the street. Milwaukee's meters measure water in hundred cubic feet, or Ccf. One Ccf = 748 gallons.
The Milwaukee Water Works uses an Automated Meter Reading system (AMR) to read water meters. AMR uses a device that sends a radio signal with information about water use that is read by a receiver in a meter reading vehicle that passes by on the street. A receiver on board picks up the radio signal and transfers it to a central database for billing, troubleshooting and analyzing. Water bills are based on actual readings and not estimates.
If you suspect problems with your water meter, please call the Milwaukee Water Works Customer Service Center, Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., (414) 286-2830.
