Captain Derrick L. Harris
Captain Derrick L. Harris joined the Milwaukee Police Department in 1996. As an Officer, Captain Harris served in District 5 and the Vice Control Division until his promotion to detective in 2002. As a detective he worked in the Vice Control Division and then moved on to the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), Drug Gang Task Force where he conducted complex drug investigations, Title III investigations and other investigations designed to dismantle drug trafficking organizations operating in the Milwaukee area. Captain Harris served in this capacity until his promotion to lieutenant in 2010. As a Lieutenant he served in the Criminal Investigation Bureau (Violent Crimes), South Investigations Division, Metropolitan Investigation Division (Homicide Unit), Drug Gang Task Force Supervisor (HIDTA), Crisis Negotiation Unit, Internal Affairs, Major Incident Response Team, Office of Management Analysis and Planning, Neighborhood Task force and the Specialized Patrol Division.
Captain Harris assumed command of the Specialized Patrol Division as a Lieutenant in 2017. The Specialized Patrol Division is home to the Tactical Enforcement Unit (SWAT), Motorcycle Unit, Tactical Planning and Logistics, Patrol and Explosive canines, Mounted Patrol Unit, Harbor Patrol unit and the Crisis Assessment Response Team. Captain Harris was promoted to Captain of Police in May of 2019 and remains the Commander of the Specialized Patrol Division.
Captain Harris holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration and Management from Kaplan University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. Captain Harris is graduate of the FBI National Academy (Class#257) and a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Captain Harris currently serves as the commander of the departments Major Incident Response Team and Honor Guard unit.
Upon the City of Milwaukee being awarded the 2020 Democratic National Convention (DNC), Captain Harris was assigned to be the lead law enforcement coordinator for the City of Milwaukee Police Department. Captain Harris directed all patrol, intelligence, and budget planning for the 2020 DNC Convention. He led and managed police personnel who were assigned to 28 sub committees for the DNC Convention and developed the overall security plan for the department. Captain Harris participated in the 2012 DNC Convention in Charlotte, N.C, and the NATO summit in Chicago IL, 2012
Captain Harris is also a Resident Security Agent with Major League Baseball and has assisted in security operations for Major League Baseball including the World Series and All-Star Games in 2017 and 2019.
