Renting a partial or entire residence to visitors for less than 1 month is commonly referred to as a Short Term Rental. The State of Wisconsin recognizes this as a Tourist Rooming House. Property owners who provide Tourist Rooming Houses commonly use services such as Airbnb and Vrbo.
The State of Wisconsin (DATCP 72) requires an operational license for Tourist Rooming Houses. As an agent of the State, the City of Milwaukee's Department of Neighborhood Services administers and inspects these properties so that they can obtain a mandatory license.
To apply for a tourist rooming house license for a property within the State of Wisconsin, download and complete this form and this checklist. Please note that the completed checklist requires submission of a floor plan.
After completing the form and checklist, you can email it here or mail it to Department of Neighborhood Services, Environmental Division, 841 N. Broadway, Room 105, Milwaukee, WI 53202.
Once we receive your application, the Department of Neighborhood Services will create a record and contact you with instructions to pay for the license. After payment is received, we will contact you to schedule an inspection of your property.
