Department of Neighborhood Services
We inspect the following units: passenger elevators, freight elevators, escalators, handicap lifts, dumb waiters and moving walks. In addition to new installations, we inspect all units once a year for proper operation.
Why We Inspect We check all safety devices on all units. On hydraulic units, we check to see if oil leaks from the pistons into the pit, if the oil return system is in proper operating condition, and, if there is a clean pit. In the pit area of an electric traction elevator, we check for proper pit of counter weight. On the top of an electric traction car, we check the hoist cables and governor rope for proper wires and discoloring of cables. While on top of the car, we check the door locks and check to make sure the landing door will close automatically as required by code at time of installation. This would also apply to hydraulic elevators. Permit & Contractor All Elevator work in the City of Milwaukee must be done with a permit obtained from the Development Center. The person applying for the permit must be a State Licensed Elevator Contractor.
