Doors Open Milwaukee - City Hall

Historic Milwaukee will host the 16th annual Doors Open Milwaukee on Sept. 26–27, offering free access to more than 180 sites across the city. Presented by UW-Milwaukee, this year’s event will feature historic landmarks, new participating locations, special family programming and opportunities to explore Milwaukee’s architecture, art and history.

City Hall Tours and Information

Explore Milwaukee’s local government in action through unique behind-the-scenes tour experiences. Climb the historic City Hall Bell Tower for a rare look at the building’s clock tower and stunning city views, and a chance to ring the bell. Visit the Common Council Chambers to admire its stained glass and learn where Milwaukee alderpersons hold public meetings and make decisions affecting the city. Or tour the City of Milwaukee Health Department Laboratory to meet the teams whose work helps identify health risks, prevent disease, and protect community health.

1. Bell Tower Tours

Climb into one of Milwaukee’s most remarkable historic landmarks on this behind-the-scenes City Hall Bell Tour. Guests will ascend approximately 150 narrow spiral and straight stairs to experience the upper levels of Milwaukee City Hall, including the historic bell and clock tower areas. Please note that this tour involves sustained stair climbing, tight spaces, and heights; it is not accessible by elevator.

Tour Notes

• Tours are every hour from 10 AM to 4 PM. Please arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for sign-in and ensure the tour starts on time.
• Pre-registration is required. Ages 16+ only.
• Approximately 150 stairs are required; stairs are spiral, narrow, and steep in places.
• Participants will enter confined historic spaces and should be comfortable with heights.
• The bell will be rung during the visit; guests sensitive to loud sounds should plan accordingly.
• Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended.

2. Council Chambers

Step inside the City of Milwaukee Common Council Chambers, the formal meeting place of Milwaukee’s elected legislative body. Take in the chamber’s historic design and striking stained-glass features, where alderpersons convene for regular meetings, public hearings, ceremonial recognitions, and key decisions affecting the city.

• Tours are self-guided. City Hall staff will be present to answer questions.
