Tax tips for Milwaukee residents

Tax filing season is in full swing, and it is important for Milwaukee residents to take advantage of every tax credit and deduction that is available to them. Two important but often underused tax credits are the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Homestead Tax Credit.

The EITC is available for both state and federal tax filings, and can help supplement the income of low- to moderate-income individuals and families. When EITC exceeds the amount of taxes owed, it results in a tax refund to those who claim and qualify for the credit. The maximum federal credit amount for tax year 2012 is $5,891; the average EITC claimed last year was around $2,200.

Last year, around 383,000 families in Wisconsin received approximately $790 million in EITC, with an average amount of $2,062. In Milwaukee County alone, some 92,000 families received approximately $230 million in EITC, with an average amount of $2,483.

The Homestead Credit is a tool to deliver property tax relief to low- and moderate-income homeowners and renters in Wisconsin. A credit of up to $1,168 is available to qualifying individuals and families who earn less than $24,680 per year.

Tax preparation assistance is available. Please go to http://www.cr-sdc.org/DefaultFilePile/Programs/Flyers/VITAMABCTaxPrepflyer_2013_English1.pdf for more information.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are filing an amended return to claim an additional refund, wait until you have received your original refund (you may cash that check). (For more information about filing an amended return, go to www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc308.html)

The City of Milwaukee is encouraging residents to keep these credits in mind when filing tax returns. Please contact the Internal Revenue Service (www.irs.gov), the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (www.revenue.wi.gov), or your local tax professional for additional information.

Get Involved with Health Research in Milwaukee

Survey of the Health of Wisconsin (SHOW) will be working in Milwaukee this April.

SHOW is an ongoing statewide public health research project that is designed to measure the health of Wisconsin residents. The information that is collected will be used as a resource to improve the health of Wisconsin families.

SHOW visits 1,000 households around the state each year to learn about the health of residents. 36 local households in Milwaukee have been invited to participate, and SHOW will begin recruitment on April 8, 2013.

The information that SHOW collects will be made available as a public-use databank for researchers, policy makers, health officials and other stakeholders to identify and address the public health needs of state residents.

SHOW is modeled after the CDC’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which has provided key health information about the nation’s health for over 50 years, and is specially designed for the Wisconsin population.

To learn more about the effort, visit www.show.wisc.edu.

None better than city’s pension system, national report shows

The City of Milwaukee Employes’ Retirement System (CMERS) is rated at the top of city pension systems in the U.S., according to a report just released by the Pew Charitable Trusts.

The report, entitled “A Widening Gap in Cities: Shortfalls in Funding for Pensions and Retiree Health Care,” in part looked at 61 cities with pension systems, and how those systems are faring in relation to the Great Recession, according to Alderman Michael J. Murphy, longtime member of the city’s ERS Annuity and Pension Board and chair of the Pension Study Task Force.

U.S. Civil Rights Division now accepting tips from Milwaukee citizens about MPD

Residents who believe Milwaukee Police officers have violated their rights now have an outlet for their concerns, with the announcement by U.S. Attorney James Santelle that the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice has set up a toll-free tip line and email address. The information gathered through these sources will be used to help determine whether Mr. Santelle and the Civil Rights Division should conduct a formal “pattern and practice” investigation of the Milwaukee Police Department.

Anyone interested in providing information can contact the Department of Justice by calling 1-855-544-5132 or via email at community.milwaukee@usdoj.gov. The recorded phone message is in both English and Spanish.

Alderman Murphy pushes to bury 138kV power line

The Public Service Commission held a Nov. 27, 2012 public hearing on the proposed 138,000-volt power lines that would run across part of western Milwaukee. During that hearing, the body heard arguments surrounding various routes the lines could take, as well as whether the lines should be below- or aboveground.

The City of Milwaukee previously has endorsed a proposal that supports placing the power lines underground along 95th St., where they will create the least disruption to the urban landscape. Alderman Michael J. Murphy, Mayor Tom Barrett and WE Energies President Gale Klappa signed a letter to the Public Service Commission this past summer asking that the lines be buried underground. The letter goes on to urge the Public Service Commission to select an underground route that either runs along N. 95th St. or parallel to the Hwy. 45 right-of-way.

Click here to view a copy of the letter.

Alderman Murphy is a recipient of the Common Ground Hero Award

Alderman Murphy joined the Rev. Bobby Sinclair of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, and Maria Prioletta of the Department of City Development at a Common Ground special event at the Italian Conference Center in late April. Alderman Murphy was the recipient of the Common Ground Hero Award for “standing with Common Ground since the beginning of our foreclosure fight and working with Common Ground to secure $33.8 million from five major banks (Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, Deutsche Bank, US Bank and Wells Fargo),” according to Common Ground’s Kathleen Scott. A portion of that $33.8 million is supporting Milwaukee Rising, a Common Ground housing revitalization initiative that is transforming foreclosed homes in city neighborhoods so that the properties can again become available for sale. Ms. Prioletta, and DCD’s Jim Sayers, and Sam Leichtling were also recognized with Hero Awards for their efforts to commit $2 million of Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) funds to Milwaukee Rising, and for working to strategically implement the funds to create a positive impact in the Sherman Park neighborhood.

IN:SITE Park East Corridor Project
Fostering temporary public art in Milwaukee County since the spring of 2006, a Milwaukee based arts group named IN:SITE is working with the City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County and private property owners to transform the Park East Corridor. The temporary art project will culminate in 11 installations on sixteen blocks of the corridor.

The City of Milwaukee Arts Board, chaired by Ald. Michael Murphy, initiated this project by voting unanimously to provide over $11,000 for artist stipends. The project invites pedestrians, bikers, people who ride the bus, and drivers to explore the Park East Corridor. Thirteen local artists have come forward with bold, diverse projects. All the art will be in place by August 23, when there will be a week of activities August 23-30.

Play the video at left to view the August 24th press conference about IN:SITE.

Sponsors and hosts for the art include, but are not limited to, the following: the City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Ruvin Development Inc., Mandel Group, Laacke & Joys, Big Bend Development, The Flatiron, M&I Bank, Time Warner Cable, The Moderne LLC, RSC Developers, Grace Lutheran Church, Riverfront Plaza and Village Church.
