Since acquiring the Century City site there has been an emphasis on reducing the volume of storm water runoff leaving the property, particularly during peak flow periods. This is one of the ways the City is working to improve conditions in the 30th Street Industrial Corridor. In 2012, a storm water detention/sedimentation basin was constructed along West Hopkins Street to manage runoff during the predevelopment phase at Century City. We are now moving toward a permanent storm water management basin that will serve the future tenants of the Century City Business Park. The existing basin will be made larger and deeper to accommodate this need. Our goal is to create a central management facility to serve business owners and reduce development costs. This will allow for more developable acreage within the business park.
Our contractor, C.W. Purpero, will begin work on the basin next week. Construction will take place on the site and in the street. Landscaping will be completed in the Spring of 2017.
West Hopkins Street between West Capitol Drive and North 27th Street will be closed to traffic between October 24th – November 22nd (see the attached map for specific areas). This will allow our contractor to make a very large and deep cut to connect the basin to the storm sewer. For safety, as well as project efficiency, a full street closure has been determined to be the best course of action. Traffic control for the closure will be very similar to the full closure that occurred in May to accommodate utility connections associated with the Greenway project. A section of 31st Street will remain partially open to accommodate businesses traffic for B83 and Century City 1 and for residential access to the alley.
RACM staff is working with area residents, businesses, City departments, and the Milwaukee County Transit System to ensure there are minimal disruptions during this time. The Milwaukee County Transit System has issued a Service Alert for Route 80. Route 80 runs along West Hopkins Street and will be re-routed during the street closure.
