Redistricting Brings 2nd District Changes

According to Alderman Davis, the redistricting process completed earlier this fall by the Common Council will mean new 2012 voting wards, polling locations, and district boundaries for aldermanic districts, including the 2nd District.

Effective in April 2012:
• The area bounded by Appleton Ave., 107th St., Daphne St., the Little Menomonee River and 91st St. has been moved from the 5th District to the 2nd District.
• Also added to the district is the area bounded by W. Silver Spring Dr., N. 55th St., W. Custer Ave. and N. 64th St. The southeastern border of the 2nd District now follows W. Fond du Lac Ave and W. Capitol Dr., with the areas east and south of these streets now in the 7th district.
• All voting wards within the district have been renumbered, and several have had their boundaries altered.

The Novel H1N1 (Swine Flu) and MPS
Medical experts are concerned that this type of flu might make a comeback in fall with more severe symptoms. Parents and children should not fear this because there are ways to protect your loved ones.

  • When a Novel H1N1 vaccine becomes available; please see that children get the immunization. It is possible that swine flu vaccinations will be provided at some school sites. MPS will provide details when they are available.

  • Find out where you could receive food assistance if your child’s school is closed and you have no access to school meals.

Captain WalshSgt. William Walsh (center, rear) with (left to right) daughter Labreea, wife Zeeland, daughter Natia, and Alderman Davis in the Council Chamber anteroom at City Hall.

Alderman Davis Honors MPD Hero
Prior to to the July 7, 2009 regular meeting of the Common Council at City Hall, Alderman Davis presented a Common Council commendation to Sgt. William Walsh (District Four day shift) for his brave actions taken June 21, 2009 which led to the arrests of three suspects in a gun incident.

On June 21 Sgt. Walsh was at home playing a video game with his daughter when he heard gunfire on the street outside. He looked out his window and saw three men, and one of the men was firing a handgun into the air.

Still wearing his flip-flops, Sgt. Walsh grabbed his police identification badge, walked outside and started pursuing the three suspects from a distance. A citizen let Sgt. Walsh borrow his cell phone to call for officers to respond to assist. The three men didn’t notice the sergeant until they approached Lancaster School, 4931 N. 68th St., where children were playing basketball on the playground.

Sgt. Walsh positioned himself to keep others out of danger and called out to the suspects and identified himself as a police officer. With the assistance provided by Sgt. Walsh, other police officers responded and arrested the three men without anyone getting hurt, and all three suspects were expected to be charged with recklessly endangering safety.

Alderman Davis said: "Sergeant Walsh knows what duty truly is, and he knows that police officers are never off duty when it comes to protecting their fellow citizens, their neighborhood, and their city. His courage and his sense of duty are to be recognized and commended, and on behalf of the citizens of our great city, I recognize and thank you."
