Snow Removal Required By Law
City of Milwaukee residents must provide for shoveling of sidewalks bordering their property within 24 hours of a completed snowfall, according to section 116-8 of the city’s Code of Ordinances. The ordinance applies to the owner, occupant or person in charge of any real property “abutting or fronting upon a paved public sidewalk or crosswalk.” This ordinance also requires property owners/occupants to prevent ice from becoming a hazard to sidewalk users by applying sand, abrasive material or any product that melts ice.

Snow blowers can be used lawfully at night; other power equipment may not operate between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. The city does not plow alleys. Also, the city urges people to please “adopt” a fire hydrant by keeping it clear of snow and ice.
