My Position on UWM Freshwater Sciences Expansion
I fully support the location of the UWM School of Freshwater Sciences at the E. Greenfield Ave. site. The existing school is there, and there is some room for expansion within the existing building. Additionally, there is an eight-acre site immediately to the west which is available and ready for construction of new school facilities. A skywalk over the existing railroad right-of-way could be constructed to connect the buildings from east to west and this would also create an opportunity for an observation deck that would look out over the Port of Milwaukee and Lake Michigan. In addition, I am working to ensure that there is an E. Greenfield Ave. rail stop if and when the KRM (Kenosha-Racine-Milwaukee) project moves forward (in 2008 the Common Council passed my resolution calling for the E. Greenfield stop). This is a golden opportunity to locate this new facility in an area that has proximity to the lake, public transportation, and many other amenities that will compliment the school. I strongly urge our decision makers to locate the school here.
The Novel H1N1 (Swine Flu) and MPS
Medical experts are concerned that this type of flu might make a comeback in fall with more severe symptoms. Parents and children should not fear this because there are ways to protect your loved ones.
- When a Novel H1N1 vaccine becomes available; please see that children get the immunization. It is possible that swine flu vaccinations will be provided at some school sites. MPS will provide details when they are available.
- Find out where you could receive food assistance if your child’s school is closed and you have no access to school meals.

Where are you going to park this winter? How can our city plow more streets to the curb?
The aldermen who represent neighborhoods with some of our city’s most densely parked streets - Nik Kovac, Robert Bauman, Jim Witkowiak, and Tony Zielinski - have begun discussions with the Department of Public Works about how we can reform our winter parking rules and snow plowing operations. The goal of this reform is to get more residential streets plowed to the curb – on both sides! – as soon as possible following snowstorms.
You are invited to join your elected representatives and the city officials who can implement reforms for a briefing on current procedures and possible changes, to be followed by a brainstorming session. Please bring your experiences with and suggestions for winter parking rules and snow plowing operations to: The Zeidler Municipal Building, 841 N Broadway, Room 102 on Thursday, August 27th at 6:30p.m.
