This project was funded by a Coastal Management Grant and focuses efforts around the intersection of Lincoln Memorial Drive and Michigan Street. The goals for the project include pedestrian and bicycle improvements, maintaining appropriate traffic movements, developing concepts for inproved public space and creating a civic design vision for a more beautiful lakefront. While limited in focus with grant funding available, the outcomes will set the stage for the larger lakefront design project.

The design, created by Eppstein Uhen Architects, included in this presentation sets the design intentions of the larger Lakefront Gateway Project.

In the spring of 2013, DCD issued an RFQ for a consultant team to further develop the design for a new Michigan St. Crossing concept that had been unveiled earlier in the year. The architectural firm of Eppstein Uhen Architects, along with Kapur & Associates, was awarded the contract.

Lakefront Gateway Concept Plan - 2013

In early spring 2013, a Lakefront Gateway concept plan was unveiled to the press by the Mayor, Governor and County Executive. The plan was a culmination of many months and years of cooperative planning between the City, State and County. Numerous other stakeholders were also brought into the planning process, which built off the earlier efforts of the Long Range Lakefront Planning Committee. The unique opportunity of change to the Lake Interchange during its reconstruction, accelerated interest in better lakefront connections to the Historic Third Ward, and recently announced investments by Northwestern Mutual all contributed to the plan coming together.

Coastal Management Grant

In March 2012, the City of Milwaukee Department of City Development was awarded a Coastal Management Grant that was intended to fund design efforts at the lakefront project area. These funds were directed at the Michigan Street Crossing project, for which DCD conducted a RFQ (Request for Qualifications) in order to hire a design consultant team. The grant was funded by the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management under the Coastal Zone Management Act, Grant # NA11NOS4190097.
