- What changes are being implemented and when will they take effect?
This service improvement provides all 1-4 unit households with every other week recycling collection in carts from spring through fall (April - November).
The winter schedule (December - March) will remain varied, allowing for snow operations to take place. This will be similar to what you've experienced in past seasons.
The schedule change will take place beginning June 1st, 2021, though your first collection day after June 1st will vary. View your next collection day by visiting www.Milwaukee.gov/CollectionDay.
- What are the benefits of these service changes?
The City first implemented recycling on a monthly basis. As household recycling volumes grew, collections were moved to every third week. We now move to every other week recycling collection to better serve our residents. This City-wide standard service level optimizes recovery of recyclables and the efficiency of collection.
- Where can I find my new collection schedule?
You can find your next collection day at Milwaukee.gov/CollectionDay. Schedules will be available for downloading in late May reflecting this city-wide rerouting of recycling that goes into effect June 1, 2021.
- Does this mean my recycling every other week will occur on the same day of the week?
Your recycling collection day will shift forward after each holiday, similar to current garbage collections.
- Will the day of my recycling collection be the same day as my garbage collection?
Recycling and garbage services are routed independently of each other. Collections may or may not fall on the same day of the week.
- Will I experience any gaps in recycling service during the transition?
During the transition, your first recycling collection under the new schedule starting in June may fall more than two weeks after your previous collection.
- I previously received weekly recycling collection service. How does this change benefit me?
One of the route types previously utilized by the City was weekly recycling collection in 18-gallon bins. The 95-gallon carts to be collected every other week provide more than twice the recycling capacity for residents while improving the City's collection efficiency.
Please note that some past requests for recycling carts in the bin service route area were honored in anticipation of this changeover. Those households will now be collected every other week in their 95-gallon cart associated with the complete re-route of our recycling collection and establishing this entire area as carted service every other week.
- Why should I recycle?
The recyclables you place in your cart today are used to create the products we need for tomorrow. Recycling creates local jobs, helps keep municipal program costs lower, and maintains resources for future generations. In recognition of these benefits, recycling is required in Wisconsin and the City of Milwaukee.
- What materials can I recycle curbside?
The following materials are accepted in your curbside recycling cart:
- Paper and cardboard
- Glass bottles and jars
- Aluminum and steel cans
- Food and beverage cartons
- #1, 2, and 5 plastic bottles and containers

- How did the City of Milwaukee receive grant funding?
The Recycling Partnership, a nonprofit organization utilizing public-private partnerships to transform recycling all across America, selected the City of Milwaukee to receive grant support because of our longstanding dedication to advancing recycling in the community. This grant funding assisted with providing educational materials about this service improvement and with the purchase of additional recycling carts for deployment to residents.
