Current:

See response to Recommendation 8.1, which suggests the department develop an organizational plan to facilitate personnel within the organization achieving leadership roles. One of the department’s objectives in bringing the Leadership in Police Organizations™ (LPO) course to the organization was to implement the concept of dispersed leadership, which encourages members at all levels to exhibit the characteristics of good leaders. These traits include effective decision making, positively influencing the behavior of others, and a dedication to organizational goals and objectives. LPO is a three-week, 120-hour course, meaning that it is a significant commitment of time and resources, and members at all ranks are encouraged to attend. While it might not be feasible to require that all officers with promotional prospective take the course prior to engaging in promotional processes because of the timing of promotions and course scheduling, all supervisors are required to attend LPO training in addition to the new supervisors’ course at the Police Academy.

Future:

LPO is a three-week, 120-hour course, meaning that it is a significant commitment of time and resources, and members at all ranks are encouraged to attend. While it might not be feasible to require that all officers with promotional prospective take the course prior to engaging in promotional processes because of the timing of promotions and course scheduling, all supervisors are required and will continue to be required to attend LPO training in addition to the new supervisors’ course at the Police Academy.
