Composting is a great way to reduce food waste. A recent Department of Public Works (DPW) study showed that households using backyard compost bins divert 25% of their food waste from the trash! To make great compost, add yard waste, such as leaves, garden debris, and grass clippings, in addition to all of your fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and filters, and other organic materials from your home. You will get a rich compost to make your soil healthier and help the City of Milwaukee reach its goal of 40% landfill diversion. - If you missed this year's compost bin sale, you can find compost bins for sale at your neighborhood retailers and used models through neighborhood swap websites.
Harvesting rainwater is the perfect complement to composting efforts. Did you know that one inch of rain falling on a 1,000 square-foot roof harvests up to 600 gallons of rainwater? Watering your lawn and garden without turning on the tap conserves resources and helps you to save on your water bill.
