SOUTH 60TH STREET RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT
All sidewalk and curb bump outs will be completed by November 22nd. The street light poles have been installed in the median throughout the project. Contractor is working to finish laying down sod on the east side of South 60th Street. During the week of November 25th, crews will install temporary pavement markings, weather permitting. Signal installation and electrical work will continue through the winter as weather permits. In the spring, remaining work will involve landscaping in the median, and permanent pavement markings. (11/22)
The contractor anticipates completing the concrete curb & gutter and pavement in the northbound lane on South 60th Street by October 25th, weather permitting. During the week of October 28th, the contractor will finish concrete walk and driveways, place asphalt on the side streets, and begin landscaping. The goal is to return traffic to its normal configuration by Monday, November 4th. A lane of traffic will be maintained on each side of the roadway while crews construct the curb bump outs on the west side of South 60th Street. (10/23)
The contractor finished pouring the mainline concrete pavement on South 60th Street on September 25th. Storm sewer adjustments and electrical conduit installation is continuing at various locations throughout the project. A second concrete crew has begun pouring curb and gutter, along with the left turn lanes and crossovers, starting from West Kinnickinnic Parkway, heading south toward West Morgan Ave. We anticipate starting to pour the driveways mid to late week of September 30th. (9/25)
As of Friday, September 20th, the contractor started pouring the mainline concrete pavement on South 60th Street, beginning at W. Kinnickinnic River Pkwy and paving south toward W. Morgan Ave. The paving operation will resume the week of September 23rd, weather permitting. (9/20)
The contractor continues to remove pavement and place base course on South 60th Street while crews are replacing storm sewer inlets and installing electrical conduit. The new sidewalk on the east side of the street from W. Kinnickinnic Pkwy to W. Oklahoma Ave., excluding the corners, has been completed. Next week, the contractor will begin grading the base coarse on the north end of the project limits in preparation of pouring the mainline concrete pavement the week of September 16th.(9/12)
The reconstruction project of South 60th Street between West Morgan Avenue to West Kinnickinnic River Parkway will consist of removing the deteriorated pavement and replacing it with new concrete pavement, curbs & gutters, and driveway approaches. In addition, service drives will be reconstructed with modified access. All sidewalk and pedestrian curb ramps will be rebuilt. New street lighting and traffic signals will be installed throughout the project and storm sewers will be upgraded where necessary. Once completed, South 60th Street will provide a two-lane divided roadway with bike lanes and parking.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING CONSTRUCTION
To minimize how construction will impact residents, businesses, and the traveling public, the project will be divided into three major stages:
Stage 1: The west side (southbound lanes, including service drives) of South 60th Street from West Morgan Avenue to West Kinnickinnic River Parkway will be closed. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on the east side (northbound lanes) of the roadway.
Stage 2: The east side (northbound lanes, including service drives) of South 60th Street from West Morgan Avenue to West Kinnickinnic River Parkway will be closed. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on the newly constructed roadway.
Stage 3: Segments of both northbound and southbound lanes of South 60th Street from West Morgan Avenue to West Kinnickinnic River Parkway will be closed to complete remaining pedestrian curb ramps on the west side of South 60th Street (southbound traffic lanes) and median work.
Pedestrian Access: Short-term disruptions will occur when sidewalk is being removed and rebuilt. Temporary pedestrian accommodations will be provided and the contractor will work with property owners to minimize impact.
Driveway Access: Service drives and residential driveway access will be restricted in the work zone. Temporary overnight parking permit instructions will be provided to those affected. Project staff will notify property owners 48 hours in advance when any driveway is being removed and rebuilt.
Bus Route: #64 will remain in service throughout construction. At the start of construction, several stops will be permanently discontinued: SB 60th and Montana, and SB & NB 60th and Holt. Temporary bus stops will be provided in areas where the existing bus stops are located in the work zone. Milwaukee County Transit will install temporary bus stop signs as necessary.
Parking: On-street parking will not be allowed during construction.
Construction Hours: Work is allowed from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
