Recognizing Efforts to Curtail Traffic Fatalities

March 18, 2014

Mayor Tom Barrett, Alderman Terry Witkowski, Police Chief Edward Flynn, and Fire Chief Mark Rohlfing addressed the results and ongoing efforts to reduce traffic deaths in 2013.
In 2013 there were a total of 30 traffic related fatalities which is tied for the 4th lowest since traffic fatalities started being kept in 1922. While accident statistics can fluctuate yearly, the City has strived to make streets easier to navigate, encourage motorists to drive responsibly, and provide responsive emergency services when an accident does occur.

South 27th Street is an example of the City’s commitment to incorporate safety improvements into our street paving program. The City of Milwaukee and AAA of Wisconsin partnered and held a series of safety audits along South 27th Street, which resulted in a list of recommended safety improvements that will be implemented as part of this summer’s reconstruction of South 27th Street.
