Milwaukee by Bike Plan (2010)

The City of Milwaukee adopted its first formal bicycle plan – Bicycle Milwaukee – in 1993.  Bicycle Milwaukee set numerous goals and objectives designed to increase the safety and ease of bicycling in Milwaukee.  The major recommendations of that plan were achieved with new bicycle lanes, bicycle routes, bike parking, and new off-street trails constructed throughout the city, and a full-time Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator was added to the Department of Public Works staff as well. These successes led to the City being named a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists (www.bikeleague.org).

While the City’s efforts to date have helped double the number of people bicycling to work in Milwaukee, many people who would like to bicyle more--for transportation, recreation, and good health--do not feel comfortable doing so on Milwaukee streets. The 2010 Milwaukee by Bike Plan builds on the successes and achievements since the 1993 Bicycle Milwaukee plan, and it aims to not only support existing bicyclists but also to encourage more bicycling by residents and visitors.

To address these concerns and the increasing community demand to support more bicycling, the 2010 Milwaukee by Bike Plan describes a vision for bicycling in the City and sets forth overarching goals, numerous facility and programmatic recommendations, and targets and measures to achieve this vision. The plan details specific goals focused on facility and support infrastructure improvements, dedicating funding to projects and programs, providing education and encouragement programs, enforcing laws to reduce crashes and safety issues, and consistently evaluating progress toward Milwaukee's goals.
