Kinnickinnic (KK) River Trail

A family biking on the Kinnickinnic River Trail A segment of the trail running along side a train.

The Kinnickinnic River Trail (KKRT) is 2-1/2 miles of off-street paved trails and on-street bike lanes. The off-street trail – South 6th Street at West Rosedale Avenue to South 1st Street at West Lincoln Avenue, and Maple Street to Washington Street – has now been completed.

This project includes the construction of a new bridge over South Chase Street at Rosedale and a new trail head at South 6th Street and West Rosedale. The segment between Lincoln Avenue and Maple Street utilizes bike lanes on S. 1st St. The KKRT is a segment of the Bay View to Downtown route, which includes the raised bike lane on Bay Street and bike lanes on S. Kinnickinnic Ave.  The final phase of that project includes the paving of S. Water Street between Washington St. and the Broadway Bridge. A previous project, funded by the federal American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA), included the removal of the dilapidated former railroad bridge over South Kinnickinnic Avenue, and the rehabilitation of the former railroad bridge over East Greenfield Avenue. The project cost approximately $425,000 in ARRA funds.

The KKRT is part of the larger Kinnickinnic River Corridor revitalization efforts underway that are improving the health and quality of life for City residents in general, and south side residents in particular.

The South 6th Street bridge reconstruction was a $3.3 million investment made by the City of Milwaukee in 2011.  In addition, the concrete removal and naturalization of the river from 6th Street to I-94 is a $4.6 million investment made by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD).  The trail head at S. 6th St. and Rosedale was funded by the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program for $15,000.  Community and environmental groups have played important roles in this revitalization effort, engaging residents and business owners through regular meetings and newsletters, and attracting additional funding for community projects.
