Program Overview

The City of Milwaukee is committed to having 50 miles of protected bikeways under construction or in development by 2026.

By creating a network of protected bikeways, the City aims to create safe paths for people biking to commute for work and play throughout Milwaukee.

In 2024, DPW plans to add 10 miles of protected bikeways to the City. Below are some of the key projects that will contribute to this network, as well as some trail connection projects that will provide people biking with better access to Milwaukee’s great trail system.

You can view all projects with protected bikeway components on our Project Map.

Complete Streets

Bikeway and Trail Connection projects adhere to Complete Streets by creating streets that are designed for both people biking and driving. Bike and trail connection projects are accompanied by lots of communication with the community to ensure that the projects being developed meet the needs of the people that will be using the street.
