Human Trafficking Task Force
The Human Trafficking Task Force of Greater Milwaukee first convened to draft recommendations aimed at improving the local response to human trafficking. Community feedback led to the formation of subcommittees to address four specific areas of concern: public awareness, service provision, education, and legislation. A final report of Task Force recommendations was presented to the County Board of Supervisors during the Fall 2012.
Meetings of the Task Force are open to the public. The Task Force meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 2-4PM. Location varies. The meetings alternate between full group meetings and meetings which break into the four workgroups. Participants represent government agencies, community organizations, faith communities, community members, survivors, and family of survivors. Those who are interested in improving Milwaukee's response to human trafficking are invited to attend.
The City of Milwaukee's Office of Violence Prevention and its Milwaukee Commission on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault are partners of the Task Force.
Resources
The Commission on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault released a survey of local organizations providing services for people who have been trafficked to better understand the landscape of existing resources.
The purpose of the study was to estimate the number of youth trafficked, create a demographic profile of trafficked youth, and obtain other descriptive information about the status of such youth at the time of contact with the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD). It includes an analysis of findings, potential research areas, and a discussion section on policy implications, particularly as they relate to BMCW services and processes and future research areas.
The Human Trafficking Task Force created its Unlucky Thirteen campaign, which includes bus shelter public service announcements, digital billboards, and online and social media efforts to spread awareness of human trafficking in Milwaukee. Parents, teens, and other concerned community members can use this website for general information as well as safety tips for both parents and teens.
