Other Archival Collections at City Records

City Records is one of three designated archival repositories for the City of Milwaukee (along with the Municipal Research Library and the Milwaukee Public Library). Records maintained permanently as part of the CRC archives function are typically either confidential, are born-digital and preserved on E-Vault, or have long-term/ongoing administrative value to the creating department. Although many of these records are not open for public examination under various provisions of Wisconsin Law, others may be of interest to researchers and members of the public, including:

  • Common Council Files, 1846-Present
    • Legislative Files, 1846-Present

A full list of archival collections open for research is available on request. Limited catalog entries for major collections are linked above and will be added as completed; finding aids for these collections are coming soon. Until then, to expedite review of records for release please notify City Records in advance of coming in to the Municipal Research Center.

Depending on the state of the collection and the type and scope of request, CRC staff may be able to conduct remote research in the event you cannot make it to City Records in person. A research fee of $15/half hour may be incurred, depending on the complexity of the request.
