Lincoln Avenue Elementary Safe Routes to School Project
Lincoln Avenue Elementary is a bilingual MPS elementary school with over 500 students from K3 to 5th grade. The school is located on Lincoln Avenue in Milwaukee's Near South Side, just down the road from Kosciuszko Park. Lincoln Avenue Elementary kicked off the first round of public workshops for Milwaukee's Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Implementation Project on January 14th.
The first public workshop for Lincoln Avenue Elementary's SRTS project was held on January 14th. Around 20 community members learned about Safe Routes to School and worked together to design infrastructure improvements for the school's neighborhood in small groups.
Community members were most concerned about students' safety when walking at 3 intersections: Lincoln and 18th, Grant and 20th, and Hayes and 19th. They were also concerned about cars speeding down Lincoln Avenue. After identifying these problems, people worked in 3 small groups to design changes to the neighborhood's streets. The maps these groups made are now being used by the City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works (DPW) to design street improvements.
What happens next?
Currently, DPW is preparing different street improvement plans based on the community members' input from the workshop. In the Fall of 2020, Lincoln Avenue Elementary will have a follow up meeting where DPW will present the different designs and ask the community which one they prefer. The community's chosen design will then be built in 2021.
