H.W. Longfellow Safe Routes to School Project

A close up view of H.W. Longfellow School

First opened in 1886, H.W. Longfellow School is a bilingual elementary school teaching students up to 8th grade. Located in Milwaukee's Clarke Square neighborhood, Longfellow is next door to Clarke Square Park and is a short walk from the Mitchell Park Domes. H.W. Longfellow School was the second school to participate in the first round of workshops for Milwaukee's Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Implementation Project.

Project Progress

Community members participating in the Longfellow SRTS workshop

The first public workshop for the H.W. Longfellow SRTS project was held on February 21st. Over 30 parents, teachers, students, and other community members learned about Safe Routes to School and worked together to design infrastructure improvements for the school's neighborhood in small groups.

If you couldn't make the meeting, take the H.W. Longfellow Safe Routes to School Survey to share where you think the biggest safety problems are.

What happens next?

Currently, DPW is preparing different street improvement plans based on the community members' input from the workshop. In the Fall of 2020, H.W. Longfellow will have a follow up meeting where DPW will present the different designs and ask the community which one they prefer. The community's chosen design will then be built in 2021.
